Abrasive Audio (in b sharp)

Nope. This isn’t me. Nice headphones tho.

Greetings, my long-lost friends. It’s been a while. Some of you may wonder where I’ve been, while others will merely skip this introduction to pounce upon the juicy parts, the ‘meat’ if you will.
To keep this short, I’ve only recently found myself. Quite literally. To be lost for a while in foreign surroundings is frustrating, terrifying, and an emotional rollercoaster to most. But for me, it’s a rather fascinating and unforgettable experience. I’ve discovered new lands, a slew of email addresses, and a crowd of faces I’ll likely never terrorize again.
But enough about me. What say we unearth some fresh sensorial shredding tunage? I’ll endeavor to keep this short, painstakingly etching my ponderations upon a one-time listen experience.

Brat (USA) – Social Grace
March 24 (Prosthetic Records)
Naturally, the albums cover gets the mind spinning. As well, it should. A splash of color in an otherwise drab, run of the mill family portrait. The music follows suit. To my knowledge, which is rather limited (so keep those email pounding digits in check), I can’t recall another band of similar ilk, fronted by a  double X chromosome venom-spitting
being. Sure, there are plentiful examples of such within the DM and BM realms, but not necessarily within this, Grindcore/Powerviolence, arena (Pupilslicer after further consideration come to mind).
So, the burning question… How does she (can I even use that phrase anymore without fear of correction and reprimand without first asking?) fair? Exceedingly, well, I’d say. The whole is an experience akin to tumbling from a monstrous cliff face. As one plummets, the landscape transforms at a startling rate. In places, the terrain is jagged, greeting one with undeniable angst, an angularity designed to snap limbs, and shred flesh. In others, the gradient is slightly less devastating, a tumbling sensation complete with a dizzying effect but jarring nevertheless. But much like the experience, the album comes to a close all too soon. Ten tracks in about twenty minutes. Sure, this isn’t enough to sate the true Gatekeepers of the Realm. The purists who believe an affair within this arena should be of a striking similarity to that of the founding pioneers. Perhaps fifteen tracks in four minutes? Thankfully this isn’t so, Brat give the audience a little more to chew upon, theirs is a controlled chaos, a brutality which leaves one wanting more without resorting to flagrant noise – a stylistic nature akin to a television sets, after hours, adieu.
So, are Brat the new darlings of the genre? Perhaps. I’d bet they’d shy away from the term. But the one thing that is neon glaringly obvious is that this leaves a mark, did I mention they’re from Louisiana (a hotbed of Sludge experimentation if ever there was a locale), has a smorgasbord of passages incorporating a slew of “genrelistic” (hell of a word that!) traits to get the juices flowing and is likely to drag fans from as far afield as Dillinger Escape Plan, Acid Bath, EyeHateGod and Brutal Truth (to name but a few) in a blissful album appreciating collective.

Ischemic (Canada) – Condemned to the Breaking Wheel
April 24 (Independent)
And the album art here certainly sparks medieval textures. A time within which one feared sharing ‘life hacks’ for fear that they might soon taste the flame whilst attached to a hastily constructed pile of twigs by a collective of religiously mind washed, miniscule intellect, villagers. But enough of my attempts at humor, how does this audio tickle the pleasure receptacles?
First, I feel I must ask. Is this an EP or an album (a full length)? Boasting four tracks, this runs close to thirty minutes. Is an EP subject to the number of tracks therein or the affairs running time? Submit your answers on a postcard and address it to questions that probably should have been posed within the pages of a Douglas Adam’s tome. And another question (while I’m of a curious disposition), what does ‘Ischemic’ actually mean? Research informs me …”it’s a lack of blood flow to a part of the body…”
If I were a medical student, I’d uncontrollably salivate, but I’m not, neither am I a rabid fan of vintage Carcass audio, so let’s move on…
Opening with a thunderous percussive cavalcade, the audio grabs the attention and fast. As the album (?) progresses several genres come to the fore; Old School DM and DeathDoom leading the pack. Undeniable melody crescents the mouth, while an underlying groove elicits the limbs to bounce free of their otherwise static constraints.
In short, the audio flows surprisingly well considering the opening tracks length nearing ten minutes (the remaining three close to the seven minute mark) obviously bring to mind Doom realms. Not surprisingly, is that the style encased here recalls the yesteryear of golden era Peaceville. With stylistic elements sparking My Dying Bride, Anathema, and Paradise Lost nostalgia. Melody is entwined with brutality encased within a dense dirge tone and pace, which is neither too slow nor too fast. The vocal style is exactly what the doctor ordered, with the whole fluid enough to keep the listeners’ attention from the myriad of existence dulling mundane adulting activities.
With the quality on offer here in mind, I can’t fathom why these fellas aren’t on a labels roster. I’m guessing they have their reasons?

Blazar (Spain) – Fatal Cosmic Wound
March 24 (Carbonized Records)
This audio offering was a gimme based on the fact that it comprises in part of members from Old School DM peddlers Cruz. Unsurprisingly, the audio here centers upon stratospheric elements, more specifically the unfathomable exapanse of the cosmos.
Stylistically, this is unhurried, sluggish, and undeniably dense. Much the same as… well, you guessed it! What might come as something of a shock (but likely not) arrives in the form of injected Synth elements. Alongside an at times Funeral Doom motif and Sludge tendencies it aids in the overall feel of incomprehensible vastness, adding a chilling, harrowing essence to a tableau of unending encompassing most everything one could imagine, but also infinitely more.
In terms of what this offers think mid- era dirge commanders Bolt Thrower colliding with Irish Doom merchants Mourning Beloveth, with a splash of (yes, I’m famous in part for leaving Morbid Angel prior to them becoming somewhat a household name) Mike Browning helmed Nocturnus, who later reformed with the initials AD (meaning After Death) to stray from copyright infringement litigation.
Understandably not for everyone. This leans more towards those whose tastes are varied and whose mood often dictates listening material. An album to complement those quiet nights in, when it’s just you, a copious amount of mind- altering smokage and a telescope. But that’s only a ‘serving suggestion’, as large companies often print in tiny letters to make something appear more delicious than it actually is. That isn’t an issue here. This goes down smoothly and comes highly recommended.

Ett Dödens Maskineri (Sweden)  – Kulterkriget
November 23 (Suicide Records)
Prepare to get smashed!
Although this is delivered with (mostly) Swedish vocals, there’s little argument even without translation that the album overflows with frustration and angst.
Unlike many other offerings following similar parameters, however, this is supremely accessible, akin to vodka without the ‘bite’. Rhythms are criminally easy to get behind, much like, for many, the rhetoric the band hopes to convey. And there’s little doubt that a full play through will leave one smiling like an absolute maniac, dazed, bruised, exhausted, and likely scrambling for texts to support the bands viewpoint and arguments.
Standout elements include varied percussive approaches, including but not limited to Punk sensibilities as well Alternate leanings, varied pace, and varying degrees of palpable angst. I have little doubt that if this wasn’t so anti-establishment in composition, it would feature dominantly on a slew of radio playlists. Huge props in this regard to the band  for “sticking to their guns,” and it should go without mentioning more so for creating an audio collection that’s so readily consumable and thus effective. This is surprisingly listenable and eons removed from that which one might assume based on the materials synopsis. This isn’t your parents’ punk, that’s fer’ damn sure.

Hyperia (Canada) – The Serpent’s Cycle
November 23 (Independent)
I’m not sure what to make of this album’s cover. A decaying yellow landscape trodden underfoot by a wandering mystic. Topped by the Eye of Sauron? I’m most probably reading too much into it. Perhaps a dissertation on the color yellow is in order?
The audio, however, is on another level entirely.
This is Thrash! It’s vicious and nasty at times, classical tinged in others, with smidges of Power metal sensibilities tossed in wily nily to spice things up.  The musicianship is top notch, the energy level hardly lets up for an instant, the rhythms are boisterous, change at a whim, and evolve with wicked potency. Prog elements are at a minimum, and this doesn’t feature the ‘disjointed’ feeling I’d typically associate with Exodus. This is melodious, features a slew of humorous soundbites, and even a passage or two which recall Speed Metal meets Classical ala The Great Kat (which likely only the true connoisseurs will recognize). But I have yet to mention the vocals. They would truly have to be special in order to fit the albums shred-tastic motifs, and they are indeed. Marlee Ryley has the vocal prowess to fit without qualm within many an extreme audio genre. The albums bonus track, a play on Heart’s ‘Crazy on You,’ proves this point. In this instance and genre, her qualities shine, only making the album that much more enjoyable.
Recc for fans of Thrash, Power, and melodic DM. Don’t sleep on this!

Coffins (Japan) – Sinister Oath
March 24 (Relapse Records)
A virtual maelstrom of severed hands, a severed head and a cathedral like snail construct. I typically wouldn’t write all these elements off together as something which I could look upon and call insanely wicked as shown here. Suffice to mention that this art has my attention. Now, for those living under a rock, Coffins have been around for twenty-five years, are Japanese and by all accounts boast a discography to leave a fan of the OSDM scene with sopping wet knickers.
It doesn’t take long to find out why this isn’t just merely rumor, or hearsay, but a concrete fact. It isn’t just that the opening track entices you in the Coffins lair, it’s that the following track proceeds to inform you that the lair isn’t that in the slightest, but rather a gaping void. A space within which the listener will gladly accept whatever it is that’s offered. In this case there’s a smorgasbord of audio torture in the offering. Bludgeoning riffs, doom laden harrowing soundscapes, rumbling chaos, groove to loosen limbs from their perch and unadulterated filth; a swampy morass strewn with putrescent unidentifiable detritus which the listener will gladly bath within as this is allowed to slither through the senses. It’s truly difficult to put into words the emotion an album such as this elicits. True, it doesn’t deliver Post or Prog elements, typically associated with the word ’emotion’, this isn’t that type of album or band, but rather a quality (of OSDM) which leaves one dazed, ecstatic and delighted and truly honored to be able to experience.
Forget the posers, the wannabes, those who draped in hype. Coffins are the standard bearers, whose maturation is akin only to a fine wine (perhaps whiskey fits better here?). Though likely a liquid one wouldn’t wish to ingest orally, I could only imagine the internal fallout from such.

Lucifuge (Germany) – Hexensabbat
May 24 (Dying Victims Productions)
First off, I love the name.
Fun fact, it’s the title of my absolute favorite ‘pygmy crooner’ album (a gold star for any reader who can name the artist). Secondly, the hyper Frazzetta styled art. It’s gorgeous, vividly adult in tone and rendered in stunning BnW. A Barbarbarian, a Bloody axe and plentiful Boobs. In essence, the three B’s of fantasy. What more could one ask for, seriously? Sure, I’m being a little adolescent here, but it’s all in good fun. As too is the audio. Wickedly swift, manacing, and steeped in homage to the most vicious speed metal of yore it excites, incites movement, throws one back a few decades to nostalgia ville and makes one wish the stereo had an extra volume setting. The album unabashedly wears influences on its sleeves. Another definite aspect of such comes by way of the Hardcore and Punk realms, as heard here in the gruff n blunt vocal approach and through the albums slightly muddy, undoubtedly vinyl throwback, but nevertheless still highly enjoyable, production values.
Thus is a fantastic slab of Blackened Speed made only better by the realization that a single person (Equinox) is responsible, except obviously in the instance of live performances. To make this short, the art brought me here, and I stayed because of the audio and also, again, because of the art.

Noctem (Spain) – Credo Certe Ne Cras
October 22 (MNRK Heavy)
Blast beats, snarled evil tongues, a hellish unforgiving battery, archaic textures, criminally infectious rhythms, and palpable atmosphere all seeped in stunning ancient mystery. There’s literally nothing here that doesn’t get my ears hard, and dripping in excitement!
This is Blackened death par excellence. While some decide to stay with the heavy hitters and prefer to stay on the same well trodden path, I’ve decided to veer. And I’ve found Noctem. They quell those darkened musical urges with undeniable savagery and precision. Might I suggest a listen, or six?

And, Why the Hell not?

A Recc via @joewebber (Twitter)
Fires in the Distance (USA) – Air Not Meant for Us
April 23 (Prosthetic Records)
It takes but a quick glance at the track titles, the albums name, and the elongated track running times to come to an assumption. This is likely Doom in nature, perhaps with a touch of melodic death tossed in for good measure.
And it is!
But don’t log off just yet!
Whereas some albums might veer too much in a certain direction; either too much of the synth dreamy textures, composition tipping the death scales. Or perhaps it’s likely the two styles don’t mesh. Hey, it happens! In this instance the stars have somehow aligned (nope, sorry, I’m not going to pontificate upon the magnificence or lack thereof in regards to the recent eclipse). This is actually good, damn good. In fact, it’s utterly sublime. The album flows without sounding forced, time loses substance as one becomes transfixed, gleefully immersed in the perfect marriage of melody, heavy and melancholia. Synth elements, although heavy in the mix, perfectly accentuate the evoked emotion courtesy of driving percussion and a vocal style sporting exquisite cadence; a growl of sorts that’s (appreciatively) perfectly decipherable, although I never tjought Id write those words, ever. Think Novembers Doom, at instances Be’lakor and also Insomnium for this is where this delightfully brilliant audio collection resides. This is so impressive, I believe I could honestly spin this several times without getting bored.

Varathron (Greece) – The Crimson Temple
December 23 (Agonia Records)
It is truly daunting trying to keep abreast of all that the (metal) scene offers. Especially since there are so may more genres now than there has ever been before. For those in the know, and within BM realms, the name Varathron should be all too familiar. Formed around 88′, theirs is a moniker synonymous with the very foundation of the Hellenic scene. Now imagine, how silly I must feel on account of this being my initial experience of that which they offer onto the ever-thirsting extreme audio masses.
The Crimson Temple is the bands seventh full length within a discography that spans over thirty-five years.
Stylistically, the album borrows heavily from melodic Heavy Metal, has its fair share of Folk essence and oozes atmosphere by way of synth created accompaniments. The whole is likely not what one might expect given the BM label description. However, the audio is exceptionally easy to appreciate. Vocals, arrive by way of the only original member (Stefan Necroabyssious) are of traditional origins, and delivered with enough bite and venom to please even the most devout purists among us (you know who you are!). Cultural flavors are infrequently peppered throughout, fantastic touches, accompanying diverse composition arrangements, to aid in the audios undeniable, often lulling, hypnotic, appeal. Varathron’s percussive approach (it might be mentioned) recalls another Greek acts output, namely Rotting Christ. Although there’s certainly enough individuality here to be able to differentiate between the two.
In short, The Crimson Temple is arguably an album one would not expect from an act with journeyman status. One might assume bearing in mind the bands celebrated history and longevity that this might be a watered down, or a phoned in affair.
Nope. Not at all!

And in all their black-cottoned glory the band themselves!

Not here.

If anything, this is a prime example of that which is possible when one decides to meticulously craft without fear of the possible reprisal resulting from the tinkering of assumed BM parameters. And don’t think for an instant that this doesn’t deliver that which fans demand. This bears the atmosphere, a wicked mixture of melodies, swiftness in all the right places, cresting riffs, archaic textures and an exquisitely molded palpable essence which enthralls. An album showcasing a multitude of ingredients, a recipe delicately produced by master craftsmen making for a result that’s well worth the wait. Or for those like me experiencing Varathron for the first time an excellent jumping on point within a discography which promises to be intoxicating.

That’s it,

Abrasive Audio – Tackling the Bookmarks

What say we dive into Bookmarked realms, yet again? As is most often the case there’s just too much audio to keep up with. Here’s to a solitary listen upon a diverse array of releases (both new and some not so much) followed by a few brief words to fully convey my thoughts. Onward…

Aschenvater (Germany) – Landungsfeldmassaker

Release – April 2021

Dead Center Productions

Genre – Dirge/DM

Thoughts – Simply put this is Bolt Thrower mixed with an Asphyx style complemented by German vocals, and… (drumroll please) it’s bloody good. Just don’t ask the surly looking dwarf on the cover for directions as he looks more likely to want to head butt you in the groin.

https://aschenvater.bandcamp.com/album/landungsfeldmassaker

Fave Track – Im Feuersturm // Entfesselte Götte

Score – 88

Funebria (Chile) – Death of the Last Sun

Release – April 2021

Satanath Records/Dark Terror Temple

Genre – Blackened Death/Grinding Death/Melodic BM

Thoughts – This could well be the one which gets away/slides under the radar. Don’t allow that to happen! Surprisingly complex and ominous this offers exquisite atmosphere as well enough unpredictability and frenetic fury to keep listeners on their toes. Equal parts grandiose presence and maniacal rhythms and criminally infectious riffage this is sure to ruffle a few feathers and upset the pecking order of many a playlist.

Fave Track – Bleeding Sacrament.

Score – 92

Militia (Hungary) – Nightmares in the Church (Reissue EP)

Release – February 2021

Grotesque Sounds

Genre – Old School/Aggressive/Blackened Thrash

Thoughts – Who knew I needed Old School Thrash with a Baroque touch in my life? I certainly didn’t! A church organ adds the weight of originality to this as well rhythms to incite movement and a vocal edge seething with evil (I couldn’t quite place them so I reached out to Void, yes, the one and only, and he nailed it by saying it sounds like …” a black metal Exciter”). Suffice it to say this won’t be forgotten in a hurry. All the must have ingredients are here folks making this a must listen especially for those with a penchant for late 80’s aggressive Thrash with bite.

https://militia666.bandcamp.com/releases

Fave Track – Years of Torment.

Score – 91

Torment (Columbia) – El Torturador (EP)

Release – 2020

Metal Del Sur/Devilmind Production

Genre – Aggressive/Old School Speed/Thrash Metal

Thoughts – There’s little doubt who influences this diabolical trio; Vendetta, Whiplash and a host of Tuetonic Thrash standouts come to mind, they even cover a track by Violent Force to reiterate the fact. Lively and caked in a style one will find difficult to not appreciate theirs is a fast-paced assault sprinkled with Heavy Metal doused with ill intent. I’ll even go so far as to forgive the obvious “borrowing” of an image known for its immediate representation. This is surprisingly good, the cover fantastic.

Fave Track – Speed Metal

Score – 82

Carnal Savagery – Fiendish

Release – April 2021

Chaos/Moribund Records

In light of the album not being on BC yet I’ve added my favorite track instead

Genre – HM2/Dirge/DeathDoom

Thoughts – Mid-paced and overflowing with groove this is high quality HM2 worship in a similar style to Grave and Vomitory. Audio which delivers throughout though really adds nothing to carve new ground within a scene which is already bursting at the seams.

Fave Track- Gluttony

Score – 86

Lucifuge (Germany) – Infernal Power

Release- April 2021

Dying Victims Productions

Genre – Blackened Speed/Heavy Metal/Crust

Thoughts – Although the cover hints at plodding, powerful, Doom this is emblazoned with attitude and raunchiness and seethes with an air which could well have originated from the early 80’s. Brisk in pace and channeling Exciter, Venom and a slew of acts bordering on the pitch BM fence this embodies everything you’d hope from an act bearing studded wristbands, bullet belts and shredded denim jackets. Add haunting melodies which a shrieking edge (which for some reason bring to mind Giallo classics) and you have a release which is a pleasant surprise and begs for further exploration.

https://lucifuge666.bandcamp.com/

Fave Track – Heresy Shall Remain

Score – 88

Sylvatica (Denmark) – Ashes and Snow

Release- April 2021

Satanath/Pest Records

Genre – Epic/Folk/Pagan/Melodic Death

Thoughts – This commences on a Within Temptation/Trans Siberia Orchestra footing and slowly shows its vast array of colors. Melodic Death passages against a tranquil Synth Folk backdrop, a delicate balance for sure which these guys somehow manage to pull off without issue. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say this is damn good, an excellent example of when Classical sensibilities frolic with the menace of Dark Metal boasting soaring melodies and an aura which evokes otherworldly, fantastical, environments tainted by drama and conflict. Recc for fans of Black Guard, Therion and Wintersun.

https://sylvatica1.bandcamp.com/album/ashes-and-snow

Fave Track -Creation

Score – 91

Scorn of Creation (New Zealand) – Annihilation Cult

Release-April 2021

Unsigned/Independent

Genre – Blackened Death/Grind/Tech Death/DeathDoom

Thoughts – Toss away those assumptions of placing the ears upon just another slab of chuggery-laden death. As this provides so much more. Channeling Old School tendencies, an aura Abysmal Dawn would be proud of, the guitar bend antics of vintage Gorguts, the ferocity and boisterous nature of Cannibal Corpse as well gymnastic rhythms ala Misery Index, this showcasing a stellar assortment of riffs upon riffs and a thick blanketing atmosphere of dread. SoC have somehow forged a release bearing a quality which puts releases by many journeyman acts to shame. It doesn’t end there however, passages of melody heighten the audio experience, topped off by intricacies and frenetic movements, exciting arrangements (the sort the local medical practitioner would deem damaging to the vertebrae) slathered in a quality and seamless fluidity which separates this from the clamoring hordes. Top-notch compositions and exemplary execution more than hints at grueling dedication to the craft which has paid off. And there’s little doubt this will carve a smile upon many a face as digits happily pounce for the replay icon again and again.

Fave Track – The Will of the Collective

Score – 91

Necronomicon (Germany) – The Final Chapter

Release – March 2021

The album isn’t up on BC so here’s a YouTube link instead

El Puerto Records

Genre – Thrash/Heavy Metal

Thoughts – A likely mash up of Sodom (harsh heavily accented vocals), Judas Priest (by way of rhythms; part Thrash, part traditional HM) and Exodus (on account of there’s a little ‘bounce’, gang vocals and plenty of faster pace switches). Overall, this is great on a first listen basis though largely uninventive (see “Spilling Blood” with arrangements uncannily close to “Mother Russia”, even down to vocal stylings, by Iron Maiden”).

Fave Track – I Am the Violence

Score – 74

Endseeker (Germany) -Mount Carcass

Release- April 2021

Metal Blade Records

Genre – OSDM/Hm2

Thoughts – Obviously with the above-mentioned HM2 style in mind this is somewhat reminiscent of Dismember (in fact the first track makes one think it could well be Dismember Mk#2) Entombed, Grave, Entrails and the like. However, this has an uncanny knack of sounding fresh. There are melodies aplenty (think “Massive Killing Capacity”) eye-opening variation in pace and fantastic vocals. All in all, a fantastic package to liven up the HM2 arena. Drop the assumptions that you’ve heard all the arena offers and set the ears upon this! Shit, as an added incentive there’s even a John Carpenter cover (“Escape From New York”).

https://endseeker.bandcamp.com/album/mount-carcass

Fave Track – Unholy Rites

Score – 92

Spell Forger (Indonesia) – Upholders of Evil (EP)

Release – April 2021

Personal Records

Genre – Blackened Speed/Thrash

Thoughts – A storm, wailing guitars and a mumbled warning. Fingers crossed that this delivers. (The Intro is certainly ominous enough). And… it does indeed.

Think Tuetonic German Thrash in a similar vein to Violent Force (complete with somewhat raw production) with vintage Kreator leanings, South American attitude and veins of melody (yes melody) add rushed vocals dipped in seething wickedness and the concoction is complete, thus is quality Blackened Speed to please even those with a hankering for the type plucked from the early 90’s. Is it wrong of me to say this is damn good audio based on my assumptions of it originating from Indonesia? It probably is, however, this about face steers me more toward the area and the music I’m most likely missing out on (as it should you). Did I mention this is damn good?

Fave Track – Curse of the Lycans

Score – 84

Something a Little Different

MotorJesus (Germany) – Hellbreaker

Release – April 2021

And here’s another album which either isn’t, or I can’t find it, on, BC. So here’s a YouTube link

AFM Records

Genre – Heavy Metal/Stoner/Southern Rock

Thoughts – You guessed it. It was the darkly humorous, vivid, weekend cowboy comic book art which pulled me in. Seconds in, however, I realized this was quite unlike that which normally caresses the senses. Against my better judgement I couldn’t move. This is damnable infectious, undeniably radio friendly but most of all ‘fun’. The vocalist has a fantastic set of pipes and the style is that which could easily accompany a 90’s genre film at just the right moment, the instant when shit hits the fan and people start to flee and panic. Somewhere between Stoner Rock and traditional HM is where this album resides, an area I admittedly don’t frequent all too often, usually only when the mood permits. With that in mind I’m extremely happy with this is in the ears (shit, there’s even a track about Judge Dredd why wouldn’t I be?) as I’m sure a great many will be also. It’s just a pity the act and the label don’t utilize Bandcamp, fingers crossed that’ll change as I’m sure there’s a large audience waiting.

Fave Track – Lawgiver

Score – 87

Stoned Karma (France) – Secret Prayer

Release – October 2018

Independent

Genre – Acoustic/Stoner Rock/Doom/Psychedelia/Hard Rock

Thoughts – Occasionally I’ll click on a random album, in other words an album I’ve not heard of or have been pointed into the direction of, in this case it was this (I’m an adventurous type of fellow). And I’ll admit I was hooked from the very first passage. Acoustic albums often wear out their welcome rather quickly (as are my tastes) however for some reason this kept my interest. A quite brilliant mix of exciting rhythms (some with definite “Western” flavor) accompanied by a stellar knowledge of how to manipulate the Wah-wah pedal. Naturally, drums are in the mix and add extra oomph when needed. Surprisingly, the whole bears the capacity to whisk the listener away, to dissipate the days stresses. A narrative fueled by emotion, action and ominous qualities conjured by the skill of the composers responsible evokes tangible images and scenarios. In short, exquisite escapism any doctor worth his salt should prescribe on a regular basis.

Fave Track – Ghost of my Innosense

Score – 91

And, back to normal programming…

Alkerdeel (Belguim) – Slonk

Release – February 2021

Consouling Sounds

Genre – Synth/Post/Black Metal/Sludge/Crust

Thoughts – Quite the odd piece of art as an enveloping accompaniment here. A frightened midstride hare (or a rabbit, take your pick) against a geometric pattern of sorts. The image obviously gives zero away as to the music within but I’m nevertheless intrigued.

And. This is quite different. The term “Post” doesn’t really encapsulate what’s on offer, neither does Synth though there’s a vast amount of it in the music’s construction. There’s also a fair bit of angst, a grinding “Crustiness”, coupled with dusting of Folk provides a sudden about face in the albums first track. And what a way to start an album. Thirteen-plus minutes which has me hooked, curious as a dizzy cat, and still not sure fully what to call this. And the brilliance continues, no two tracks are alike though the magnificence continues. A certain hypnotic quality has managed to take ahold, it’s obvious at this point that Alkerdeel have no desire to stick to a premeditated, predictable formula. This is different yet so satisfyingly familiar it’s damn eerie. Pitch Black sensibilities and a nostalgic tone engulf the listener in a vise grip as an assortment of menacing types (in this instance extreme audio styles) take their turn to pummel the senses. The main culprit however is the remarkable “skins man” (although it could also be a lady manipulating the sticks) and their ability to insert an unmerciful drive and backbone to this whole affair. There’s all manner of words and phrases one could use to describe this. Admittedly, most of which escape my senses at present as the last vestiges of the album remarkable nature slips away and my ability to concentrate returns. Albeit sluggishly.

Fave Track – I couldn’t answer with a gun to my head.

Score – 94

Terminalist (Denmark) – The Great Acceleration

Indisciplinarian

Release- May 2021

Genre – Aggressive/Technical Thrash/Death

Thoughts – Don’t let the opening salvo fool you, this album is deliciously varied in its approach. Sure, at times this is blistering fast, but whilst being intricate within the pleasingly infectious riff structures it also boasts atmosphere and an aura which is perilously close to dissonant realms. The vocals are the main element (although there are rhythms which hint at the exploration of Blackened realms) which gives this a Death edge and boy, do they fit! The total package is one which is sure to entice a great many extreme audio fan to turn their head. A fantastic debut full length which could well bring much needed attention to the scene within a locale which isn’t mentioned all too often.

Fave Track – Invention of the Shipwreck

Score – 93

Upcoming Releases to Keep the Ears Pinned to the Ground in Anticipation

Killing Addiction (USA) Mind of a New God

Release- June 2021

Xtreem Music

Genre – Death Metal

Thoughts – These guys have been at it for a while (in an area known for churning out quality DM) though have a sparse discography to their name. It’s been more than a decade since their last. So, how does this fare? Mid-tempo and choppy is the style on offer here as well the occasional foray into frenetic rhythms packed with groove. Similar artists which come to mind are Cannibal Corpse, albeit minus at times the technical aspect, and Jungle Rot. The overall style, although nothing too far from the norm, will not disappoint those with a hankering for Floridian Death circa the 90’s.

Fave Track – Mind of a New God

Trumbiten (Sweden) – Emotions (3- track EP)

Release – May 2021

Independent

Genre – Thrash/Progressive/Power/Epic/Heavy Metal/Melodic Death

Thoughts – Starting out on an eye-opening footing this EP shows fantastic promise and definite talent in both the composition and talent arenas. Rhythms are melodious yet driving. Leads are plentiful, exciting, and hint at a myriad of influence from across the metal spectrum. Hard to categorize, this is easier to appreciate and will definitely appeal to those who prefer clean (on offer here bordering in instances upon Glam/Hair metal territories) singing albeit with their Thrash or audio which teases melodic Death realms. Keep the ears peeled for this Father/Son duo has a great deal to offer.

Pharaoh (USA) – The Powers That Be

Release- June 2021

Cruz Del Sur

Genre – Power/Speed/Epic//Doom/Heavy Metal

Thoughts – Energetic rhythms worshipping at the altar of gymnastic and intricate fretboard manipulation hold the attention as this caresses the senses. Riffs, both nostalgic and fresh, are plentiful within arrangements which are likely to appeal to a wide swath of the metal community. This is not what I expected to hear with the term Power Metal in mind. The vocals are far from falsetto realms and the overall style, a melodic Rollercoaster (minus the queasy feeling) hints at Speed realms though remains firmly upon a tradition Metal foundation. In instances I’m put in mind of the brilliance of Haunt, “Thundersteel” era Riot, others more melodic, swifter, Dokken and in others still Halloween even “Powerslave” Iron Maiden. In short, if melodic, traditional, Heavy Metal is your thing you’d be remiss not to lay ears upon this.

Meurtrières (France) – s/t (EP)

Release- February 2020

Gates of Hell, Nameless Grave, Crystal Blade, Armee de la Mort Records

Genre – Heavy Metal/Hard Rock/NWOBHM

Thoughts – Channeling vintage Maiden, Diamond Head and Blitzkrieg this also bears a vintage tone. The lyrics are in French, with vocals reaching falsetto heights, but it matters not (I’m sure there’s a translation available online someplace?) the rhythms are predictably of the galloping variety, the arrangements infectious, the drum sound of the like to make the limbs twitch and the vibe one which conjures denim jackets and rifling through record stores stacked with vinyl. This is a tad obscure though sure to perk interest in the vintage HM fan camps, possibly also in the adventurous Stoner Rock encampment.

Funeral Leech (USA) -Death Mediation

Release – May 2020

Carbonized Records

Genre – OSDM/DeathDoom/Dirge

Thoughts – Mid-paced and menacing this bears a hypnotic quality and a blanket of dread, an atmosphere, one can sink into. Melancholic and haunting and thick in molasses heaviness, deadly infectious groove pulsing riffs incite the limbs to twitchin’. For a debut the quality here is astounding. Jump on this pronto!

Dark Symphonies

Genre – Thrash/Death/OSDM

Thoughts – With a slew of acts boasting the same moniker it’s a wonder I ever stumbled upon this. But I’m glad I did. Fans of Benediction, Asphyx, (vintage) Sinister and (older) Pestilence are guaranteed to eagerly lap this up. The album bears a similar mid paced, groove-laden style and vocals somewhere between Barney (Subconscious Terror era) and Dave Ingram. It’s just a pity the act broke up and never reached the same level of quality as heard here again. The reissue (the link which I’ve provided) contains the “Dying Alone” 1992 demo; the vocals are a little rougher/OS in tone here, but the percussion is similar, if a tad more straight-forward.

Planet of the Dead (New Zealand)- Fear of a Dead Planet

Release – February 2020

Independent

Genre – Doom/Stoner Rock/Fuzz/Hard Rock/Sludge

Thoughts – Just when one might have started to believe that the arena of Doom had little to offer along comes an act like PotD. Bursting with movement and groove aplenty this isn’t the Doom your parents blasted when you were young (I only wish my parents were that cool) this has an aura about it which spits immediate recognition. Huge riffs coupled with an undercurrent of mesmerizing dirge, a vocal accompaniment which makes one ponder upon the (most probably imposing) bearded monolith from which said sounds issue and an overall style which is surprisingly easy to appreciate even though it’s a slight step away from the traditional (the albums final track seethes with nostalgia for those wanting it). Recc for fans of Olde, Monster Magnet and Conan.

Onslaught (UK) – Generation Antichrist

Release- August 2020

AFM Records

Genre- Aggressive/Old School Thrash

Thoughts – When I was in High School, I discovered “In Search of Sanity”. I believe I wore the tape out! For some reason I haven’t kept up with bands antics, I honestly didn’t know they were still around, so imagine my surprise when I hit play on this (some 30 years later) only to discover I like it even more than the previously mentioned album. How can it be? Is it witchcraft, Avon, Protein Supplements? I have no clue. But if you like Thrash in a similar vein to Overkill. later Exodus and early Annihilator, be prepared for this is godly, must listen to material indeedy!

Aeon (Sweden) – Aeons Black

Release – November 2012

Metal Blade Records

Genre – Blackened Death/OSDM

Thoughts – Have you ever wondered what an act might sound like if it were comprised of several audio elements you might already be familiar with? Aeon appears as such. Somewhat a wicked amalgamation (although these aren’t ‘companies’ per se) of Morbid Angel, Vital Remains, Abysmal Dawn and Deicide. Draped in malevolence, menace, and an archaic diabolical nature, theirs is a style which is grandiose, atmosphere laden and somewhat stabbing, or better still, ferociously blunt, rather than traditionally melodic in the riff and rhythm department. A commanding vocal accompaniment delivers lyrics in a fashion one can understand (admittedly a rarity in the genre) upon all manner of topic which isn’t altogether rare. Occasional groove finds its way into the fold as well occasional teasing passages hinting that Aeon might at any instance plunge into Slam territories. Broken up by instrumental interludes (bearing a classical cinematic nature) the album isn’t by any means traditional of a realm in which brutality unmercifully reigns but rather an arena in which there’s a delicate shifting balance of intricacy and fury.

Metal-Is Records

Genre – Power/Epic/Heavy Metal

Thoughts – It takes but a second for those with any doubts that this is strictly Power Metal for the thought to dissipate. Melodious singing, an intro which screams EPIC and rhythms considered safe enough (by foundations specializing in such things) for the whole family. With that in mind however, I must admit this is difficult not to like. Naturally, it will depend on the mood especially if, like me, your typical audio diet consists of Brutality, palpable atmosphere, and lyrical material sure to send Granma into seizure. Melodies for days, riffs to get the head a nodding and all backed by arrangements which bring to mind a slew of nostalgic HM acts as well, on occasion, passages from more recent Thrasterpieces (see what I did there?) I’m of the mind I could easily return to this, mood willing, and that what’s on offer here obviously won’t ‘resonate’ with all. For fans of Iron Maiden, Rhapsody, Riot and Halloween this will make a fantastic addition to an otherwise impressive audio collection.

Nuclear Blast

Genre – Melodic Death

Thoughts – Melodic and atmosphere laden this could well be called “Death Light” (if it were ever to be packaged in a bottle). Hardly controversial or offensive, based on the lyrical content on offer (this album strays from traditional grotesque DM subject matter) this is more ‘material’ for those who prefer to slower slip into Extreme Audio realms, as opposed to plunging, without a care, straight into murky depths. Though with that in mind the albums art (even the variant version) somehow reminds me of a Carcass album cover. Although this is excellently crafted, sports a great deal of talent, a fantastic variety of pace and fretboard manipulations which most can marvel at, it’s strange that for some reason I just can’t seem to fall under that which the album offers. This is far from horrid; it just isn’t for me!

How’s that for an honest review?

Pulverized Records

Genre – HM2/OSDM

Thoughts – Does this fella ever sleep? This collection of tracks starts as one might expect and makes an immediate impression for those feverish for HM2 antics in a vein like early Entombed, Dismember and Carnage. As well the menacing vocal attributes of Rogga this also sports surprising groove nestled among pleasing length bursts of audio which never outstay their welcome. But it doesn’t stop there. I’m pleased to report this delivers all a fan could hope. The hype raised by the, dripping in putrescence, art is valid, this is the real deal and Rogga has done it again! Just try not to move, as this crawls with vile ravenous intent across the senses.

Ding, ding, its time for new tunes

And there it is, another Abrasive Audio in the books. Apologies for the lateness with this one, life often has a knack for placing rather interesting and often quite frustrating obstacles in an otherwise clear path. Here’s hoping this entry has provided sufficient candy for the ears to warrant excitement and a widening of entryways into audio realms one might not normally visit. As always, a huge thanks to the patient PR firms who send me such enticing material, I only wish I had more time to scribble upon more of it. You’ll notice I haven’t touched upon the newest Cannibal Corpse (… yet).

Feel free to comment, suggest and share that which I’ve scribbled upon. It’s always a pleasure to promote that which, in my opinion (yours will most definitely differ), is worthy of such.

Your slave to extreme audio,
