Voidhanger’s Best of 2018

Better late than never, right?  2018 was a Hell of a year, and narrowing it down was difficult.  That’s why we’re thankful for extensive honorable mentions lists!

Honorable mentions:

Mortuous – Through Wilderness

Abigor – Höllenzwang – Chronicles of Perdition –

Eskhaton – Omegalitheos

Funeral Winds – Sinister Creed

Hyperdontia – Nexus of Teeth

Mortuous – Through Wilderness

Pagan Hellfire – At the Resting Depths Eternal

Ulthar – Cosmovore

Now, on to the meat and potatoes.  The cream of the crop.  The best of the best.  Starting with…

 #10: Nécropole – “Solarité”

An indisputably French sound with delicate strings of melody weaving through the cold harshness, Nécropole are a shining example of how black metal can forge brave new sounds without betraying the old style.

“Necropole” doesn’t translate as  a dead Polish fella

#9 Outre-Tombe – “Nécrovortex”

Three years after dropping their massive debut “Répurgation,” Quebecois death metal band Outre-Tombe continue their old school, Sweden-worshipping death assault with a flailing, unrestrained follow-up.

#8: Akitsa – “Credo”

Quebec’s long-running black metal flagship returned in 2018 with their sixth album.  Raw, powerful and with lots of punk influence, “Credo” is Akitsa’s clearest and most focused statement of intent to date.  Awesome cuts like ‘Le monde et ma bile’ showcase Akitsa in prime form and not losing even a smidgen of steam.

#7: Clandestine Blaze – “Tranquility of Death”

Clandestine Blaze continues to fly high the banner of unrepentant, no-frills black metal.  While “Tranquility of Death” isn’t quite on the same lofty level as “City of Slaughter” (my #1 album for 2017), it holds its own and Clandestine Blaze keeps representing the best of what the genre has to offer.

clandestine blaze

#6: Old Tower – “Stellary Wisdom”

The only non-metal entry on this list, Old Tower channel the sound and emotional resonance of early Mortiis, especially “Født til å Herske.”  A morose journey through medieval dusks and lunar sanctums, it compels you to let go and forget everything else.

old tower

#5: Summoning – “With Doom We Come”

A bit of a dark horse in the Summoning discography, “With Doom We Come” seems to have come and gone with little fanfare.  This might be due to it being a more sullen affair than their comparatively bombastic releases like “Let Heroes Sing Your Mortal Fame” or “Oath Bound.”  Contemplative, introspective, mournful and melancholic are all words that apply to “With Doom We Come” in addition to all the various adjectives for “epic” that are usually found in conjunction with Summoning.  Sit back and let these visions of the darker regions of Middle-Earth engulf you.

#4: Spectral Wound – “Infernal Decadence”

Firmly entrenched in the Quebec black metal sound with Finnish flairs, “Infernal Decadence” is aggressive but with copious melody and an organic, full sound.  Not a single filler track to be found on the album and they’re a killer live act to boot, so catch ‘em if you can.

spectral wound

#3: Drawn and Quartered – “The One Who Lurks”

Managing to release top-tier material over 20 years into a career is a damn impressive feat, but Drawn and Quartered make it look easy by remaining at the top of their game and unleashing one of their most accomplished albums yet.  “The One Who Lurks” brings Drawn and Quartered to unprecedented levels of savagery and complexity.

#2: Moenen of Xezbeth – “Ancient Spells of Darkness…”

The very soundtrack to a lich awakening in its musty crypt after aeons of restless sleep, Moenen of Xezbeth masterfully echo the mystical feel of Samael and early Hellenic bands Zemial, Agatus, Twilight and Necromantia.  “Ancient Spells of Darkness…” sounds like it could have been recorded in the early nineties and is an absolute gift to anyone who adores that era.

#1: Tomb Mold – “Manor of Infinite Forms”

“Manor of Infinite Forms” is a savage flying dragon kick of death metal to the throat that takes the blueprint from their 2017 debut and steps it up in every way.  Sounding like classic Finnish bands Demilich, Convulse and Demigod exploded and spattered their gore-drenched viscera all over Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower and Entombed, Tomb Mold is way closer to death metal perfection than a band this young has any business being.  Here’s hoping the already-announced 2019 album continues their meteoric rise.

Thanks Void. Thanks for your invaluable input, thoughts and mind numbing knowledge on the darker corners of the extreme metal universe.

Here’s to another stunning year of metal, minus the bullshit drama.

My Honorable Mentions have been tossed out into the stratosphere for all to ponder upon so I’ll not drop more than a few words of introduction this time around. All that’s left is for the final countdown (thankfully not the mind numbing track by Europe) to assault the eyeballs.
But first, before I toss my assorted nonsensical ponderings out into the cosmos, more than a few suggestions from a couple of like-minded friends.

I was blown away by this releases what can i say, they stayed true to their sound and the riffing is wicked good, all band members get to shine on this album. tight with some touch of folk and Scandinavian. Stefan Necroabyssious vocals still remain amazing. A Must!!!!
Clandestine Blaze – Tranquility Of Death after 20 years of making raw harsh black metal, one man band from Finland Mikko Aspa has made a great structure with catchy, pandemonium solos that still stay true to what he has created from 1999 to now. A mix of Goatlord/Darkthrone is what i get when i play some Clandestine blaze.
cult des ghoules
Cultes Des Ghoules – Sinister, Or Treading The Darker Paths (Poland) 4th album with a growth to a more of a medieval sabbath Barathrum approach on this album, I have to say this is no background album at all, really good 100%.

Archgoat – The Luciferian Crown 4th album, this band is what I imagined hell sounds like holy shit man the riffing, The vocals, is as if Lucifer is vocalizing on Archgoat. Drumming on this album is non-stop holy shit. I like the way the keyboards and some agony sounds are incorporated in this. just an unforgettable album. this is my all time favorite album of 2018 just perfect evolution to greatness hell yeah.
Uhrilahja- En fördärvad värld band from Finland 1st full length album Black metal catchy riffs with Atmospheric melodic riffing, some keyboards too, not bad at all I really like the vocals grim and some clean vocals too, this album gets better and better as each track comes to an end. Derek (co-host of Blackin’ Out with Denver and Derek)
(in the most part unedited)
blackin out
Begotten – A Waining Silhouette + And The Wind Cries Death
I’m counting both of these, because combined they are the length of a Full album. Besides that, this shit just speaks to me. When I found black metal as a teen and decided it was the music I wanted to play, this is the exact shit I was going for and trying to come up with. It’s all around perfect to me
Church of the Cosmic Skull – Science Fiction
Completely sucked in and under their command, call me Brother Derek cause I want to be a part of this shit. Just positive progressive hippie rock full of catchy riffs and love. Very repetitive which I didn’t like at first but now I wouldn’t have it any other way
Dautha – Brethren of the Black Soil
As much as I like some doom metal stuff like this is really outside the box for me, but I loved it the first time I heard it. Usually something this epic I save for rainy days and only put in for special occasions but I honesty don’t think I could hear this album enough. Didn’t even realize it was a 2018 album until I started making this list cause it has such a “stood the test of time” sound.
Craft – White Noise And Black Metal
That is exactly what it is. Though it’s different from earlier Craft, everything you love about this band is still there. If anything it’s just a little more fine tuned. A riff master for sure. Craft is a band that every time they release an album it will probably end up on my favorites for the year.
Andrew WK – You’re not Alone
I am not very much unlike Andrew WK, in fact if there was a cult dedicated to this man I would probably be some high priest. This is his most Andrew WK album. He even incorporated some his motivational speeches in the album. Just feel good shit for people who want to always enjoy life.
haunted dayburner
Haunted – Dayburner
Another album I wasn’t completely sold on at first and after I spent a little more time with it I realized not only is it a grand epic to withstand decades, it’s actually better than their first album. This album goes further, darker and deeper into an occult atmosphere. Perfect to burn shit to late at night and do weird poses to freak your neighbors the fuck out.
Manacle – No Fear To Preserve
Like King Diamond/Helloween, if your not sold on that, yer fucked. Classic and recorded so perfectly it would confuse anyone that this wasn’t a long lost band from the before times. Jaw dropping
Forlor – Towards The End
I knew it was something special from the first time I heard it. I never thought I would own it on vinyl and the fact that I do can make me giddy like a drunkard. Everything I love about melodic black metal with a touch too much of keyboard for my liking but only at times. Doesn’t hurt the album. It’s from beginning Towards the end what I love to hear.
Vomitor – Pestilent Death
This album taught me things about metal. In fact it may be the most metal album I’ve heard this year. After hearing that this band writes their rhythms and just enters the studio to bang out the rest and always put out a solid album makes me cower in unworthiness. This album is sick, rad, destructive,… it’s a titanium boner
Dopethrone – Transcanadian Anger
This is a band that always puts out shit that I like more every time I hear it. Catchy and fun but deep nasty and scummy for all your dirty needs. This album was there for me when I wanted to be a piece of shit person, and it got me through that.
insane evil
Insane – Evil
Though it took me a few listens to realize, this album has all the long-lasting greatness that made Hell Awaits a classic. 100% thrash excellence but with the perfect amount of melody and NWOBHM influence to give it something extra.
